About the Historical Society
We are a nonprofit, 501(c)3 corporation under the auspices of the New York State Board of Regents.
Our Mission
The Society collects, preserves and exhibits materials pertinent to the social and cultural development of the customs, traditions and lifestyles of rural America with emphasis on the 19th century, especially as relates to the history of the Town of Elma NY.
This is accomplished by:
- Promoting and encouraging historical research;
- Helping to preserve and protect buildings and sites of historic interest;
- Collecting, preserving and displaying records, relics and other things of
historic interest; - Marking places of historic interest with suitable monuments and
markers; - Co-operating with officials in ensuring the preservation and
accessibility of the records and archives of the Town and institutions; - Promoting greater interaction with the schools.
The Historical Society operates the museum for the purpose of displaying for public view items and exhibits of historical and/or cultural interests.
